Orbital by Samantha Harvey

Six astronauts circle the earth as they conduct experiments, observing the effects of space on plants, rodents, and each other. Sixteen orbits in a twenty-four-hour earth 'day', They learn of the death of a mother on Earth and watch a powerful typhoon develop over an island. They spin past continents and through seasons, and they question the relationship between humans and their planet.

Orbital is a slim book, a mere 130 pages or so, but every paragraph, every sentence is packed with meaning, imagery and questions, and I'll definitely keep returning to it. The words conjure colour, light, texture, and emotion as the six astronauts go about their daily tasks, eat, sleep, and observe Earth as they spin around it, watching weather systems, sunrises, mountains and oceans. They get news from their families and contemplate the fragility of life, both human and the planet itself.

I've created just one shade and dyed it on two bases; gleamy | singles and bray | lace. A ~fluid~ combination of turquoise, violet, gold, and pink and all the shades in between as the dyes overlap and blend. I chose intentionally to overcrowd the dye pans and to apply the dye completely randomly while heating quickly, so each skein is unique, some intense, some softly pastel. Use either alone, or hold together for a glorious fabric with a gorgeous halo and sheen...

This is a shade that I can recreate (and would love to!) so I'll leave pre-orders open if there's a demand and dye more in small batches...

Our 'currently reading' micro-collections are limited edition shades inspired by the book currently on my bedside table.

Each collection comprises just a handful of shades, dyed on a variety of yarn bases and is released as I'm reading a book I'm loving.

Please note - this limited edition collection does not qualify for our 'sweater quantity' discount.
