#skeinLight
is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.

The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...

I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2024, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.

February – An early morning walk as the sun rose on a frosted landscape. I took photos of the misty meadow, and the pink sky, but it was the light hitting the back door of our garage studio that created the magical moment that inspired these two shades...

Frosty condensation lit by the rising, glowing, golden sun and the surrounding droplets like tiny prisms of rosy pink and lavender. A dream to play with in the dye pots and the two shades that emerged ~ reflected light ~ and ~condensed light ~ work perfectly together or independently

Both shades are dyed on a brand new (to us) yarn base.  gleamy | singles is British bluefaced leicester spun as a single-ply yarn, and it's a dream to dye! I love dyeing single-ply yarn but superwash merino can be a prone to pilling and wear a little too quickly if used to knit garments, this BFL fibre is harder-wearing while retaining all the great qualities of a single-ply yarn. It has the characteristic 'crinkle' in the skein that shows off the sheen, and it takes dye beautifully, creating subtle tonal blends and nuanced semi-solid shades. This base might well become a regular!

We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.

We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
