#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.

The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...

I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2024, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.

January – I'm enjoying learning how the light moves around our new home, since our move back in November, and our perfect east/west view across a series of rolling meadows has been a delight to experience through sunshine, showers, fog, and bitter cold frosts in the few weeks we've been here. But the first photo I've chosen is of a fleeting perfect moment as night fell. The sun had already slipped well below the hedgerow but pin-pricks of fiery orange light glimmered through the dense evergreen trees, like fireflies. Above the hedge line, the light glowed dusty lavender, pale gold and lilac as the indigo sky rapidly darkened. As always, nature provides the perfect palette, to spark the creative imagination and create two shades of yarn. The first ~dusk light~ is a blend of periwinkle, lavender, and soft buttery gold, with the tiniest speckles of rich vibrant orange. Its semi-solid companion ~last light~ is the perfect inky indigo blue...

Both shades are dyed on cooms | fingering, our bouncy, 3-ply superwash merino base that is perfect for scarves, shawls, and lightweight garments.

We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.

We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
