#skeinLight is my chance to indulge my love of light in all its nuanced forms, as I take a single image from my light-filled camera roll each month and use it to create two shades. One variegated, either ~flash~ or ~fluid~, and a semi-solid companion to contrast or compliment.
The sky, the sea, the sun on a hay meadow, shadows on a worn brick path, glimmers of light on a mist-cloaked marsh. Fairy lights, moonlight, crepuscular rays through a moody cloud-scudded sky. I love the way the play of light can change the atmosphere and outlook entirely, and change my mood...
I'll be using all of the above as inspiration for this year's limited-run series. Two shades each month throughout 2025, dyed on a variety of fingering weight yarn bases, some from our regular range and some popping-up just for this series.
March – Over the past few years we've spent a lot of time at Snape Maltings courtesy of our musical offspring, and this little building has to be one of my favourites! It's the Dovecote gallery, a peculiar little space, formed from the derelict brick remains of a Victorian dovecote that has a weathered steel 'shell' inside it! Whatever is being exhibited inside its simple ply interior is always worth a look, from sound installations to pencil sketches, but it's the way it catches the light, and sits against the sky that always catches my eye. Sometimes the rough rusted texture against a stormy grey, sometimes, like this time, positively alive in the late afternoon gloaming.
The ~flash~ variegated shade is a combination of rich rust, warm red, cool lavender, and bright sky blue, and it's called dovecote glow. Its semi-solid companion is the palest lilac lavender, a barely there shade with warm undertones and a pearly glaze. It's called dovecote haze, and it's an attempt to capture the soft pink glaze that coated everything and brought the scene to life.
Both shades are dyed on hoo | sock, our favourite upcycled merino/nylon sock yarn that is, of course, perfect for socks but also lovely for shawls, scarves, and lightweight garmernts...
We use professional acid dyes with good light and wash fastness and do our best to exhaust every dye bath and reuse water wherever possible to reduce any further environmental impact. Occasionally a small amount of 'loose' dye may remain in the yarn after rinsing (most likely with deeply saturated shades) and we always recommend hand washing in very cool water and pre-washing your yarn separately if you are intending to mix light and dark shades in a single garment/project.
We recommend hand washing your finished projects in cool water to preserve the vibrancy of the dye and, as with all small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that doesn't have dye lots, we also recommend knitting alternate rows from two skeins when working on larger projects to avoid noticeable changes between skeins.
