Throughout 2025 we're creating capsule collections of non-superwash yarn in limited palettes inspired by nature.

// earthen // comprises six shades, dyed on two yarn bases:

gull | fingering is a 2-ply heavy fingering weight blend of British Bluefaced Leicester and Gotland wool. Sheepy, with a soft fuzzy halo, and worsted spun for great stitch definition, this is perfect for colourwork, cables, and held alongside a fluffy yarn to create a warm cosy fabric – a truly versatile yarn! Which is why we've also dyed aker | lace in the same six shades...

chalk ~ a soft neutral stone grey. The gull | fingering version of this shade is virtually undyed (just a hint of 'greige') to show off the lovely soft grey tones of this yarn in its natural state. This might just be the perfect neutral base shade...

sand ~ soft sandy gold tones that compliment grey, rust, and brown tones perfectly. Not deeply saturated, this shade has nuance and variation shining through from the grey base fibre.

silt ~ a pale peachy subtle terracotta with a light touch, so it has lots of tonal variation and nuance from the grey tone of the base fibre.

clay ~ a rich rusty terracotta that works beautifully with ~silt~ and ~chalk~ and contrasts perfectly with ~moss~ and ~peat~

moss ~ the perfect green? I couldn't possibly say... it's a rich mossy green with warm undertones and it's created with lots and lots of layers so is deeply saturated and rich.

peat ~ a deep, rich brown that is particularly fabulous as a 'lowlight' contrasted with the warm tones of ~sand~ or ~silt~ but would also be perfect on its own!

Because gull | fingering has a natural grey colour and aker | lace is creamy white when undyed, the shades will never be identical on both bases, so we dye them side-by-side, by eye, to create close, complimentary versions of the shades that work beautifully together, adding depth and interest, while not being identical in every hue and tone.

Non-superwash yarn can require a little more thought and attention to care but the rewards are plentiful! Fibres that haven't been superwash treated tend to have more memory, bite, and structural interest, and the lack of chemical/processing intervention makes them better for the environment.

Alongside the ready-to-ship yarn, we've made all the shades available dyed-to-order, so you can purchase just what you like, in the exact quantities you need, for whatever project you have in mind. We will never mix dye batches without consulting you first, and we'll always make sure that if you're ordering gull | fingering and aker | lace in the samew shade that they're dyed side-by-side...
